Cooking outdoors can be a delightful experience, especially when surrounded by the serene beauty of nature. At ChukkiMane Forest Farmers Summer Camp, we believe in connecting with nature in every possible way, including through food. Here are some outdoor cooking tips and simple vegetarian recipes that you can try during your stay with us:

Outdoor Cooking Tips:

    • Plan Ahead: Before heading out, plan your meals and prepare a list of ingredients and cooking utensils you’ll need.
    • Pack Wisely: Use sturdy, lightweight cookware and utensils that are suitable for outdoor cooking. Don’t forget essentials like a cutting board, knife, and matches or a lighter.
    • Choose the Right Cooking Method: Depending on your meal, choose between grilling, campfire cooking, or using a portable stove.
    • Keep it Simple: Opt for recipes that are easy to prepare and require minimal ingredients. One-pot meals and foil packet recipes are great choices.
    • Practice Fire Safety: If using a campfire, ensure it is permitted and follow all fire safety guidelines. Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to extinguish the fire completely.
    • Clean Up After Yourself: Leave no trace by properly disposing of waste and cleaning up your cooking area.

Simple Vegetarian Recipes

  1. Grilled Veggie Skewers
    • Ingredients: Assorted vegetables (bell peppers, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms), oil, salt, pepper, herbs (optional).
    • Instructions: Cut vegetables into bite-sized pieces. Thread onto skewers. Brush with oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and herbs. Grill until vegetables are tender and slightly charred.
  2. Foil Packet Potatoes
    • Ingredients: Potatoes, onions, bell peppers, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, herbs.
    • Instructions: Slice potatoes and onions. Place on a sheet of foil. Add bell peppers and garlic. Drizzle with oil, sprinkle with salt, pepper, and herbs. Seal the foil packet tightly. Grill until potatoes are tender.
  3. Campfire Veggie Chilli
    • Ingredients: Beans, tomatoes, corn, bell peppers, onion, garlic, chilli powder, cumin, salt, pepper.
    • Instructions: In a pot, sauté onions, bell peppers, and garlic. Add beans, tomatoes, corn, and spices. Cook over a campfire or stove until flavours are blended and chilli is heated through.
  4. Banana Boat Dessert
    • Ingredients: Bananas, Chocolate chips, Nuts (optional), Honey, Aluminium foil
    • Instructions: Slice a banana lengthwise, leaving the peel on. Fill the slit with chocolate chips and nuts. Drizzle with honey. Wrap in foil and place on the grill or in the coals of a campfire. Cook until chocolate and marshmallows are melted. Carefully unwrap the foil, being cautious of steam. Enjoy the chocolatey goodness straight from the peel!
